In the last decade, bachata dancing in Athens has grown from a small niche within the Latin dance scene into one of the most popular social dances in the city. Today, it is almost impossible to talk about Latin dancing in Athens without mentioning bachata nights, sensual bachata events and the growing international community that gathers every week to dance.
But this wasn’t always the case.
Just a few years ago, the Latin dance scene in Athens looked very different.
The Early Latin Dance Scene in Athens
For many years, the dominant Latin dance in Athens was salsa. Most Latin parties across the city were salsa-oriented, and the community around salsa dancing was well established.
Latin nights were typically structured with playlists that were roughly 85% salsa and 15% bachata, and salsa was the main attraction. Many dancers identified themselves primarily as “salseros,” and bachata was often considered a secondary dance.
During this time, the Latin dance community revolved around instructors, dance schools and a handful of venues where dancers gathered regularly.
The scene was vibrant, but it was also somewhat structured around established groups and schools.
Meanwhile, bachata was slowly gaining popularity around the world. Internationally, the dance was evolving rapidly, especially with the rise of sensual bachata, a style that blended traditional bachata with influences from contemporary dance and other partner dances.
Athens was about to follow that same trend.
The First Bachata Influences in Athens
Around 2013–2016, bachata began to take a more serious place within the Greek Latin dance community.
One of the early contributors to this movement was Angel Vizcarra, who played a key role in promoting bachata and helping to professionalize its teaching in Greece. His dance school, became one of the early places where dancers could explore bachata in a more structured way.
At the same time, other instructors such as Aris Angelopoulos from Stella Dance Art also contributed significantly to the development of a stronger bachata culture in Athens.
Despite these efforts, the bachata community was still relatively small. Salsa was still the dominant dance, and most events were organized around salsa-focused communities.
But things were about to change.
The Birth of Addictiva Athens Bar
In 2019, Addictiva Athens Bar opened its doors.
At the time, the venue was originally designed as a salsa-focused Latin bar, reflecting the trends of the scene. Salsa was still the main dance style, and the expectation was that salsa nights would dominate the dance floor.
However, the reality turned out to be more complex.
When Addictiva first opened, parts of the established salsa community were hesitant to embrace the new venue. Some dancers continued attending events organized by specific dance schools or existing communities, which made the beginning challenging.
Rather than relying only on the traditional salsa structure, Addictiva started experimenting with different formats and dance styles.
And that’s where bachata began to take center stage.
The Rise of Bachata Parties in Athens
Around that time, one of the most successful bachata-focused events in Athens was a sensual bachata party known as Lights Out, which took place on Mondays.
This event demonstrated something important: there was a strong demand for bachata social dancing.
Inspired by this trend, Addictiva created its own concept event called Closed Eyes, a sensual bachata night inspired by the idea of dancing bachata with closed eyes and fully connecting with the music.
The concept resonated with dancers immediately.
The event quickly became popular and helped reveal something crucial: the bachata community in Athens was ready to grow.
Building a New Bachata Community
One of the most important decisions made at Addictiva was to build a dance culture that was inclusive and social.
In many traditional Latin parties, dancers sometimes stayed within their own groups or dance schools. Beginners could feel intimidated, especially if they didn’t know many people on the dance floor.
At Addictiva, the philosophy was different.
Instructors and experienced dancers were encouraged to dance with everyone, including beginners. New dancers were welcomed, and the atmosphere focused on learning, connection and fun rather than exclusivity.
This approach helped many new dancers feel comfortable stepping onto the dance floor.
And as more people joined the community, the bachata scene in Athens began expanding rapidly.
The New Generation of Bachata Dancers
During these years, several new dancers and instructors began emerging within the Athens bachata scene.
Among them were dancers like Dimitris Vafeiadis, who later became one of the most recognizable bachata dancer in the community, also Elena Heshmat that came from Egypt in Athens Late 2022 became a very important teacher for the community.
Other dancers such as Vicky and Yperion also developed their careers within this growing environment, contributing to the expansion of bachata culture in the city. Also, Vasilis Komninos helped a lot by teaching bachata in salsa schools to promote it! Lastly, lots of other bachata teachers helped growing the community and you can find them dancing at Addictiva!!
These dancers helped bring new energy and visibility to bachata in Athens, performing, teaching and participating in events that attracted both local dancers and international visitors.
Over time, Addictiva became a meeting point where many of these dancers could connect with the community.
Why Bachata Became So Popular
The global rise of bachata also played an important role.
Compared to salsa, bachata has a unique characteristic:
It is easy to start but difficult to master.
The basic steps of bachata are relatively simple, which makes it accessible for beginners. Many people can start dancing bachata after just one lesson.
But at higher levels, bachata becomes extremely complex. Advanced dancers combine musicality, body movement, connection and creative variations, making it a highly expressive and evolving dance.
Because of this balance, bachata has attracted a massive number of new dancers worldwide.
Athens was no exception.
Bachata Overtakes Salsa
After 2022–2023, the change became clear.
Across Europe and many international dance festivals, bachata began surpassing salsa in popularity.
Athens followed the same trend.
More dancers started requesting bachata music, more instructors began teaching it, and more parties began focusing primarily on bachata rather than salsa.
Addictiva had already positioned itself strongly within this movement.
While many venues in Athens remained primarily salsa-oriented, Addictiva gradually became known as a bachata hub.
Addictiva as a Bachata Hub in Athens
Today, Addictiva is widely recognized as one of the central places for bachata dancing in Athens.
The venue hosts multiple bachata events every week and regularly organizes social dancing nights, guest instructors and free classes before parties.
The goal has always been simple: grow the dance community and make bachata accessible to everyone.
